OTHER AUTISM ORGANIZATIONS

Autism Speaks
http://www.autismspeaks.org/

Autism Speaks is dedicated to increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders, to funding research into the causes, prevention, treatments and cure for autism, and to advocating for the needs of affected families. Founded in February 2005 by Suzanne and Bob Wright, the grandparents of a child with autism, Autism Speaks later merged with the National Alliance for Autism Research (NAAR) and Cure Autism Now (CAN) bringing together the nation's three leading autism advocacy organizations.

Autism Society of America (ASA)
http://www.autism-society.org/

ASA exists to improve the lives of all affected by autism. They do this by increasing public awareness about the day-to-day issues faced by people on the spectrum, advocating for appropriate services for individuals across the lifespan, and providing the latest information regarding treatment, education, research and advocacy.

First Signs
http://www.firstsigns.org/

First Signs is dedicated to the early identification and intervention of children with developmental delays and disorders. The organization provides a wealth of resources ranging from healthy development to concerns about a child; from the screening and referral process, to treatments for autism spectrum disorders. Their stated goal is to improve screening and referral practices and to lower the age at which young children are identified with autism and other developmental disorders.

National Autism Association (NAA)
http://www.nationalautismassociation.org/

NAA's mission is to educate and empower families affected by autism and other neurological disorders, while advocating on behalf of those who cannot fight for their own rights. They aim to educate society that autism is not a lifelong incurable genetic disorder but one that is biomedically definable and treatable. Their efforts include raising public and professional awareness of environmental toxins as causative factors in neurological damage that often results in an autism or related diagnosis.

Video Modeling
http://www.necc.org/about/ourproducts.asp

Video modeling is a teaching methodology that has been shown to produce rapid acquisition of a variety of skills in children with autism. Because children with autism often fail to develop the rich repertoires of pretend play seen in typically-developing children, teaching play is a critical component to an effective treatment plan. Researchers have demonstrated that children can learn daily living skills, how to have conversations and perspective-taking using video modeling. Now, evidence supports the use of video modeling to teach play skills like game playing and pretend play.

Oral Motor Therapy
http://speech-language-therapy.com/oralmotortherapy.htm

Exercises for the mouth, or what some Speech Language Pathologists (Speech and Language Therapists) call "oral motor exercises", "oral motor therapy" or "oro-motor work", are, in some clinical settings, a prominent component of intervention for children with speech sound disorders. The activities, which may include sucking thickened drinks through straws, blowing cotton balls, horns and "windmills", chewing plastic and rubber objects, licking peanut butter from around the mouth, and playing with 'oral motor tools and toys', sound like they might be fun. Nothing wrong with that! Therapy should be fun!
