BASE is guided by a belief that the best options for success and improved quality of life occur when supports are provided within the natural environment; therefore, we strive to educate and support individuals on the autism spectrum within their home and community setting. BASE employs a full-time autism consultant to partner with families, educators, and community service providers to facilitate effective environments that ensure success for all individuals on the autism spectrum. 

All services are provided free of charge. BASE relies on community donations to support its work.

  • Information and referral for autism services in Bermuda
  • Parent support and training
  • Home and school consultation
  • Community education for educators, health professionals, and other interested individuals
  • Advocacy on behalf of individuals with autism and their families

 Autism Consultant

Susannah Cole was employed by BASE in May 2010 to the role of autism consultant. She received her bachelor’s degree in child studies from the University of Guelph and went on to earn a master’s degree in education from the University of Toronto in Canada. Susannah has worked in the field of education for the past 11 years with an emphasis in special education. 

Susannah’s primary role with BASE is to develop and enhance effective supports in the home and community for individuals on the autism spectrum. She works closely with children, families, team members, and educators to provide individualised, hands-on support, training, and feedback. Susannah provides:

  • Assessment for indicators of autism spectrum disorders.  

  • Thorough and current information and resources on autism.  

  • Individual consultation in the following areas: academic goals; communication; positive behaviour support; social skill development; sensory development; self-regulation; and daily living skills.  

  • Practical recommendations regarding the most up-to-date intervention strategies that can be implemented at home, school, and in the community.  

  • Autism education and training customized to meet the needs of the audience.
