| MISSION STATEMENT
Our Mission Statement: We strive to be a solid foundation for parents, professionals, and all persons living with and affected by the Autism Spectrum. Our goal is to bring to the community a greater awareness of Autism through education and information and thereby increase community understanding and support for those living with autism.
HISTORY
BASE was formed in February 2001 by a group of parents who felt that more information and education on Autism was needed on the island so that their children would be able to receive the services they needed. We were granted charity status in March 2001. We began with 20 members, comprised mainly of parents and caregivers, and now have a membership which includes occupational therapists, physiotherapists, speech language pathologists, pediatricians, teachers, paraprofessionals, and
parents/grandparents.
We have been granted indefinite charity status.
We have provided the community with numerous educational seminars and workshops presented by overseas experts on Autism. Have scheduled quarterly meeting for the next year and plan to have speakers at these meetings. We also produce a quarterly newsletter.
We join the USA and UK in celebrating April as Autism awareness month and do a large promotion and fundraising effort during the month of April. Funds donated to BASE are used to defray the cost of seminars and workshops and to continuously update our Library.
BASE is a member of the Autism Society of America, The Geneva Centre for Autism in Canada, and the National Autistic Society in England, membership in this organizations helps to us keep up to date on new information coming out on Autism.
